Korban tsunami di Mentawai meningkat

PADANG 27 Okt. – Kapal-kapal tentera laut yang sarat dengan ubat-ubatan dan makanan serta helikopter yang membawa pasukan penyelamat hari ini bergegas ke rangkaian pulau terpencil Indonesia yang dilanda tsunami setinggi tiga meter, menghanyutkan perkampungan dan meragut sekurang-kurangnya 282 nyawa.

Ombak bergelora dan cuaca buruk menjejaskan operasi menyelamat, memaksa penduduk kampung mengusahakan perkara keperluan secara sendiri selama hampir dua hari.

Ketua daerah, Edison Saleho berkata, disebabkan tidak cukup orang untuk menggali kubur, mayat-mayat mangsa masih bergelimpangan di pantai dan jalan raya manakala nelayan turun ke laut untuk mencari mangsa terselamat.

Garis sesaran yang runtuh pada Isnin lalu di perairan pulau Sumatera, adalah punca sama kepada gempa bumi tahun 2004 dan tsunami raksasa Lautan Hindi yang membunuh 230,000 orang di berpuluh-puluh negara.

Pegawai bencana gagal memasuki kampung di kepulauan Mentawai, destinasi popular peluncur ombak yang biasanya memakan masa 12 jam perjalanan menggunakan bot.

Bagaimanapun persediaan untuk menghadapi perkara tidak diingini telah disiapkan hari ini.

Beratus-ratus beg mayat telah dihantar ke lokasi kejadian, ketua unit gerakan bencana Kementerian Kesihatan, Mudjiarto.

Gempa bumi 7.7 skala Richter yang berlaku malam Isnin lalu pada kedalaman hanya 20 kilometer di bawah laut diikuti dengan sekurang-kurangnya 14 gegaran susulan dengan gempa terkuat pad 6.2 skala Richter.

Pengarah pusat pengurusan bencana wilayah Sumatera Barat, Harmensyah menyatakan angka kematian meningkat kepada 272 orang dengan lebih 400 lagi masih hilang.

Pesawat kargo pertama membawa 16 tan khemah, ubat-ubatan, makanan dan pakaian tiba hari ini, kata jurucakap Agensi Pengurusan Bencana Kebangsaan, Nelis Zuliastri.

Seorang lagi pegawai bencana, Ade Edward menyatakan dua buah helikopter juga sedang dalam perjalanan termasuk sebuah bot membawa berpuluh-puluh anggota polis dan tentera. – AP
